For communicating in a second national language, the ability to speak this language is fundamental. At school, however, the opportunities for practicing this oral language competence are limited. For this reason, efforts have been made for some time to enable pupils with different mother tongues to practice speaking a second national language together. In such a “language tandem”, pupils speak in the language of the other person's mother tongue and can thus receive continuous feedback on their own speaking. However, language tandems involve overcoming physical distances, which incurs time and financial costs. These obstacles could be overcome by using social virtual reality (VR). This SocialVR can be visited together using VR glasses that are connected to each other via the internet. It consists of life-sized, three-dimensional environments, such as a virtual apartment, in which people can meet and talk to each other. SocialVR can therefore be used to learn the language of the other person directly and naturally in the midst of an interactive everyday situation, despite physical distance. In the project described here, we will form tandem pairs with students, each consisting of a German-speaking and a French-speaking person. We will ask these tandem pairs to meet in a SocialVR we have developed and talk to each other in German and French. We will then test the students' vocabulary and ask them to rate their learning experience. In this way, we want to investigate the utility of SocialVR for learning German and French together.
