Supporting teachers to stay healthy at work

The teaching profession is exciting but also demanding and challenging. Teachers are a particularly stressed occupational group with an above-average burnout rate compared to other occupations. Teachers must stay healthy at work because stress affects their health, social interactions in the classroom, and positive student development. The ATLAS study aims to strengthen teachers' health, promote successful social interactions, and support the positive development of students.

What is the design of the study?

Teachers and students are taking part in the study. The teachers teach 5th to 9th grade and the students belong to the teacher's class. The study begins in November 2025 and lasts two years. A total of four measurements will be taken. The teachers and students complete an online questionnaire. For teachers, we also record the biological consequences of stress (e.g., hormones and blood pressure). For teachers, this takes two hours per year and one hour for the students.

Why is the study important?

Thanks to your participation, we will gain new insights into teachers' psychological and biological stress levels and their effects on student development. We may also better understand which factors in everyday school life trigger stress and which factors protect teachers from stress.
