Rooms of their Own: Writing Women in Great Britain and America
We will look at a variety of writings by women from the 19th century into the 21st century, focussing on different ethnicities and different media
What cultural and political issues do women writers address? What voices, what images do they find to tell their stories? What common concerns and what shifts in aesthetic self-expression can we discover?
Starting with Virginia Woolf’s "A Room of One’s Own” we will look at feminist manifestos as well as the tradition of women’s writing she proposes.
We will also look at more contemporary women who "rewrite” this literary canon, by bringing the perspective of ethnicity into play. Finally, we will look at women who have excelled in the medium of film and video clips.
