The Jacobs Foundation has approved funding for a new collaborative project between PHBern and two Ghanaian universities. The project, ‘Children’s interactions in classrooms and developmental outcomes in Switzerland and Ghana’, is funded as part of the LEVANTE initiative and the Young Scholars Programme. It is jointly led by Sergej Wüthrich from PHBern’s Research Programme on Inclusive Education, Davis Mawuena Aweso from the University of Education, Winneba, and Ernest Opoku from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana.

The project builds on PHBern’s LEVANTE project SEED, which investigates which school experiences are particularly important for children with different learning and developmental needs. The new collaborative project explores comparable questions in Ghana, with a particular focus on the role of classroom interactions in children’s development. Both projects will start in spring 2027.

The collaboration brings together different academic perspectives and insights from the two national contexts. Davis Mawuena Aweso’s research interests include early learning, multilingualism and inclusive education, while Ernest Opoku focuses particularly on teacher education and professional identity. The funding provides an opportunity to further develop the collaboration between PHBern and the two Ghanaian universities that emerged through the Young Scholars Programme and to explore these research questions across different educational contexts.
