Englisch kann im Studienschwerpunkt Zyklus 2 (3. bis 6. Schuljahr) als Wahlpflichtfach belegt werden.
Studierende mit Studienschwerpunkt Zyklus 1 und Studierende mit Studienschwerpunkt Zyklus 2, die Englisch nicht als Wahlpflichtfach gewählt haben, können im Fachbereich Englisch ein Erweiterungsdiplom erlangen.
Eine Sprachkompetenz mindestens auf Niveau B2.2 (B2+) ist im Studienplan Primarstufe 2023 (Studienbeginn ab Frühlingssemester 2023) Voraussetzung für den Besuch des Moduls «Englisch 2». Das Zertifikat muss vor der Anmeldung zum Modul «Englisch 2» eingereicht werden.
Eine Sprachkompetenz mindestens auf Niveau B2.2 (B2+) ist im Studienplan Primarstufe 2013 (Studienbeginn bis und mit Herbstsemester 2022) Voraussetzung für den Besuch des Moduls «Englisch 1». Das Zertifikat muss vor der Anmeldung zum Modul «Englisch 1» eingereicht werden.
In beiden Fällen darf das Zertifikat bei Studienbeginn nicht älter als 3 Jahre sein. Ein eidgenössisch anerkanntes zweisprachiges Maturitätszeugnis Deutsch-Englisch wird ebenfalls anerkannt.

Students without one of the above-mentioned certificates (main suite exams) have the opportunity to take the Placement Test LINGUASKILL GENERAL (Reading/Listening module). LINGUASKILL is an online, adaptive testing system designed by Cambridge Assessment English and assesses candidates at any level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
PHBern IPS no longer offers a venue for students to take a placement test. However, Swiss Exams offers the placement test LINGUASKILL with remote-proctoring. Click here for more information about LINGUASKILL General (Module Reading and Listening).

To qualify for the attendance of the English modules at PHBern, students have to achieve an average score of 180+ (C1 on the CEFR) LINGUASKILL GENERAL in the Listening and Reading module. The score on a placement test has to be higher than on a certificate (main suite exam) as it is a diagnostic test and not a summative result. PHBern will only accept a LINGUASKILL GENERAL (Reading / Listening module) test result from Swiss Exams Skills, issued after April 2021; no other placement test nor provider will be accepted.

Please note that in general certificates cannot be older than three years at the time of enrolment at PH Bern. However, exceptions are made for students with CPE.
