From 3 to 7 June 2026, Sergej Wüthrich from the Inclusive Education research programme and Luciano Gasser from the Learning and Development in School Contexts research programme attended the Jacobs Foundation Conference “From Evidence to Action: Charting the LEVANTE Roadmap for Education Systems Impact” at Marbach Castle in Germany.
As one of eight newly selected LEVANTE sites, PHBern is part of the second cohort of this global research initiative, which aims to better understand how children learn across different languages, cultures and contexts, and to support the development of more effective educational approaches worldwide. A key feature of all LEVANTE projects is the use of an openly developed, freely available, standardised and adaptive assessment battery designed to measure core aspects of child development.
The conference brought together researchers from all 14 LEVANTE sites, alongside internationally renowned education experts and policymakers. Discussions focused on introducing the new research sites and exploring how research evidence can be translated more effectively into educational policy and practice.
As part of the programme, Luciano Gasser presented the PHBern LEVANTE project “The Role of Classroom and School Environments in Children’s Development”, which he leads together with Caroline Sahli Lozano and Sergej Wüthrich. The project investigates how classroom interactions and school environments shape children’s development and how schools can respond to diverse learning and developmental needs.
An important aspect of the LEVANTE initiative is its collaboration with partners in the Global South. As part of the Jacobs Foundation’s “Young Scholars” Programme, Sergej Wüthrich joined Ernest Opoku (University of Cape Coast) and Davis Aweso (University of Education, Winneba, Ghana) in presenting a pitch for a new research project seeking support through the programme.
